Renovation and Construction at the Port of Trois-Rivières | Pomerleau

Welcome to our channel! Today, we present an ambitious and innovative project led by Pomerleau: the modernization and securing of the port infrastructures at the Port of Trois-Rivières. This extensive ...project includes the demolition and reconstruction of Wharf 17 as well as the construction of a brand-new Wharf 16.

Project Objectives

The project aims to improve the resilience of the infrastructures against extreme weather conditions and port constraints. To achieve this, a 360-meter combined wall and 150-foot-long piles have been installed. Additionally, recycled materials were used for the backfill and reconstruction of the retaining walls, ensuring the durability of the infrastructures.

Deep and Maritime Foundations

Pomerleau ensures impeccable execution of the work through total control of operations and strict adherence to port requirements. The work includes the installation of piles and sheet piles to ensure the stability of the wharves against hydraulic constraints and heavy loads. The reconstruction of Wharf 17 required the demolition of a 45-meter-long and 12-meter-deep anti-scour wall underwater, as well as the replacement of over 37,000 linear feet of piles and sheet piles. A double structural membrane of 110,000 square feet was also installed underwater. Nearly 550,000 tons of stones were used to fill the basin, and about 20,000 tons of concrete from the old wharves were recycled.

Earthworks and Soil Reinforcement

Earthworks operations stabilize the surroundings of the wharves and ensure their integration into the urban environment. They include excavation, leveling, and the placement of backfill, while promoting the reuse of materials from the demolition. A new retaining wall is constructed, complemented by the installation of anchor rods to reinforce resistance to loads and maritime conditions.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the main challenges of the project lies in the coordination of earthworks, requiring smooth and structured management. The presence of a basin containing fish adds an important environmental dimension, involving rigorous care of the aquatic ecosystem. Measures are in place to prevent pollution from construction debris or chemicals, as well as to minimize excessive turbidity that could affect aquatic fauna. Demolition generates dust, but water trucks regularly spray the construction areas to reduce airborne dust. Managing water turbidity is essential to maintain the quality of water resources. Noise and vibrations generated by the work are also controlled through appropriate measures.

Innovation and Sustainability

Innovation is at the heart of the project, making the Port of Trois-Rivières an urban, sustainable, and innovative port. Pomerleau implements innovative solutions to improve the project's sustainability and minimize its environmental impact. The use of 3D and 4D modeling allows precise and real-time monitoring of construction progress, ensuring efficient execution. Several eco-friendly measures have been implemented, including the use of dust suppressants, optimization of machinery and vehicle movements, and limiting work in aquatic environments during sensitive periods.
